Long Home Products gives back: Charities we’re passionate about
Published on Monday June 25, 2018Long Home Products was built on professionalism, quality, and service. Our passion for service, however, goes beyond just providing support for our customers and their homes. Whether we’re laying wreaths at Arlington Cemetery or putting roofs over people’s heads, we love giving back to our community.
Being in the roofing business has instilled in us a deep appreciation for the simple fact that we have roofs over our heads. For many, home improvement may seem like a necessity. While we are the biggest advocates of safe, functional homes, we also recognize that home improvement is, in fact, a luxury. Having the means to make your home safe and comfortable is not something everyone can do—and that’s why we started our very own charity, The Good Neighbor Project.
The Good Neighbor Project
As a part of the community, we feel a responsibility to be good neighbors. We launched The Good Neighbor Project last fall as a way to serve local families who don’t have the means to pay for a necessary roof replacement.
Employees at Long Home Products can submit families for consideration throughout the year, and this year’s family was particularly special. Our corporate sales trainer, Mike Lyons, got to experience the generosity of the program first hand.
The couple chosen last year, The Prestons, emulate what it means to be a good neighbor — providing constant support and service to others in their local community. Mr. Preston is a veteran and pastor at their local church and Mrs. Preston donates her time and amazing cooking ability to tirelessly help anyone she can. The Prestons were in desperate need of a new roof but were struggling with how to pay for it, so Mike and the Vice President of Sales, Jeff, visited their home to discuss options and ultimately announce that they had been chosen for the program. Mike and Jeff soon learned that a family member had been admitted to the hospital, making the announcement that much more emotional and meaningful.
“This was the single most gratifying experience of my time at Long,” explains Mike.
The roof replacement was completed in October of 2017, and the family has been enjoying their new and improved home ever since.
Bo’s Effort
Bo’s Effort was founded in 2015 by John, Jill, Katie, and Johnny DePaola in honor of their late son and brother, Bo DePaola, who passed away at just 20 years old. Mental Illness is often marked by shame and judgement. Families are often left hopeless, helpless, scared, shattered, and without necessary resources. Bo’s Effort seeks to assemble community resources to break the stigma of mental illness through education and guidance — to fund programs that educate family members and individuals seeking help to manage their illnesses and live healthy, productive lives.
Bo’s Effort funds two mental health positions at Anne Arundel Medical Center Mental Health Services, vital educational programs at the local Chapter of The National Alliance on Mental Illness, and is looking to expand into other areas of the community to help even more people struggling with mental illness.
In May, Long Roofing served as a Gold Sponsor of the Bo’s Effort Annual Golf Tournament for the 3rd consecutive year.
Habitat For Humanity
Long Home Products is a proud supporter of Habitat for Humanity and their mission to give every person an affordable place to live. Habitat for Humanity works in nearly 1,400 communities spanning across 70 countries.
We were naturally drawn to this organization having been in the home improvement industry for more than 7 decades. Habitat for Humanity not only renovates existing homes, but also works with communities to repair and improve homes, recover after natural disasters, and help families work through financing options.
Decorate A Vet
Decorate a Vet assists veterans in Northern Virginia with home repair, improvement, and decoration.
Long Home Products employees have donated money and contributed to services like gutter cleaning, tree trimming, and various landscaping needs, as many veterans are unable to keep up with basic household chores. The organization has received more than $35,000 in donations and has decorated more than 20 veterans.
Fuel Fund of Maryland
We’re passionate about Fuel Fund of Maryland’s mission to help Maryland families pay for costs associated with home utilities and find long-term solutions related to home energy affordability.
The organization not only promotes safe homes, but also prevents homelessness, keeps children in school, and assists the elderly and disabled. Just this year, more than 10,000 homes will be assisted.
