This is a big deal: The Lido Civic Club of Washington, D.C.  plans to honor Long Home Products CEO John DePaola with its 2017 Man of the Year Award on Saturday, Nov. 18 at the annual Past Presidents’ Night Gala.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Bethesda Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.

I am proud of my Italian heritage,” John says, “and I’ve been fortunate to be able to give back to my community. This award is humbling, and it is very special for me and my family.”

What is the Lido Civic Club’s Man of the Year Award?

Let’s start with the Lido Civic Club. This Italian-American cultural organization was founded in 1929 and is dedicated to serving the Washington metropolitan community through civic and charitable activities.

Since 2004, the Lido Civic Club has provided more than $577,000 in college scholarships to deserving students. The Club’s charitable programs support wounded veterans, the elderly and victims of natural disasters.

The Lido Civic Club’s Man of the Year Award recognizes outstanding civic achievement within the Italian-American community. John’s joining a very distinguished group: past recipients of Lido Civic Club awards include U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, former U.S. Congresswoman Constance Morella (R-Maryland), late U.S. Congressman Peter Rodino (D-New Jersey), legendary race car driver Mario Andretti, longtime Motion Picture Association of America President Jack Valenti, International Developers, Inc. Founder Giuseppe Cecchi and U.S. Marine Corps General and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Peter Pace, among many others.

John’s bona fides

“We choose individuals for Man of the Year who have contributed to the community, have been philanthropists  and who have risen to the top of their profession,” Tom Stallone, a member of the LCC selection committee, told us. John fits all three of these criteria.

John, with his wife, Jill, built Long Home Products and its family of products into household names across the East Coast over the past 21 years. He and Jill also oversaw the launch of Long Home Products.

Away from the job, John and Jill founded the Bo DePaola Family Foundation in memory of their son, Bo DePaola, working to break the stigma of mental illness with education and guidance. The foundation has worked with the Anne Arundel Medical Center, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Anne Arundel County and other valued community partners.

Long Home Products also works closely with other charitable groups across the region, supporting such programs as Decorate A Vet, Habitat for Humanity, the Fuel Fund of Maryland, the American Heart Association, the March of Dimes, Walk MS and the Vienna (Va.) Little League.

What if I want to go to the event?

That would be great! We’d love to see you there. Tickets and tables can be purchased online at the Past Presidents’ Night 2017 page on the Lido Civic Club of Washington, D.C. website.
